SYKES: WE HAVE EVERY CHANCE OF MAKING PLAY-OFFS
Wakefield match winner Paul Sykes did not want to take all the credit after his superb drop goal with the last kick off the game gave the Wildcats a crucial two points and saluted the Trinity defence.
Paul Sykes dramatically won the game for the Wildcats with a drop goal in the dying seconds.
Sykes produced a fantastic performance that resulted in a last gasp one pointer which has pushed Richard Agar’s men to just one point outside the play-offs after beating St Helens 33-32 at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.
The victory means the hosts have won four successive games for the first time since 2009 and gives them a real chance of reaching the top eight with a crucial fixture next Sunday against Hull KR.
Half-back Paul Sykes kicked four goals before his field goal went between the sticks which gave Wildcats a well-deserved victory after himself and Tim Smith failed to knock over a drop goal just minutes earlier. Sykes was quick to pay credit to the home crowd after celebrating the win.
“It was a quick snap, I’m just glad it went over. The fans have been great and they’ve came out in their numbers and got behind us really well and I am just glad we got the two points.
“It was a really good match and it was end-to-end stuff and to be honest I can’t believe we got three chances to get a drop goal over. Saints are a really good team and were just glad to come away with the win.
“Some defence by the boys, we’ve focused on that all week and we’ve been focusing on that for the last few weeks so it is good that it is showing in games and it really paid off.”
Trinity head coach Richard Agar admitted for the first time he believes his side can reach the play-offs and Sykes is in full agreement. Wakefield will leap above Rovers with a victory at Ms3 Craven Park next week with Salford and Widnes still to play and Sykes says the hard work is paying off.
“We are just holding our own at the minute, we are doing what we are doing because of the training. Timmy is a great ball player and a joy to play off the back off and I try to make things work outside me, everybody is clicking at the moment and we are finding a bit of form at the right time of the season.
“I think we are (in with a chance of the play-offs), if we carry on playing the type of rugby that we are doing and defending like we are, albeit we let 30-odd points in today, we defended pretty well. I think we have every chance and I’m looking forward to it.”
Tickets for the trip to Humberside are as follows: £18 for adults while concessions (over 60’s and students with valid ID) will be charged at just £10. 5-16 year olds will be entered into MS3 Craven Park for only £5 while under 5’s are admitted as free.
